Having lived in California for the past 26 years, I know what it is like to go through droughts – it is scary.  The most recent period of insufficient rainfall has forced public utilities to urge water conservation at all levels and enforce water use restrictions in many areas including the city in which I live.

I do feel guilty when I keep the water running while I brush my teeth or transfer dishes in between sinks.  In the past 2 years, I have made a conscious effort to change my water usage patterns including turning off the faucet during teeth-brushing, minimizing the water-flow in general, and reducing shower time supplemented by a low-flow showerhead.  Yet, I feel that these gestures not enough.  But, I think I have found a great solution that makes water conservation a little easier!

At the 2009 Green California Summit and Exposition, I came upon WaterSmart Technology.  I admit, the products didn’t look too sexy and I almost passed up the booth.  However I did start listening in on a sales pitch and the 2 gentlemen were very sincere about their products.

The What: FaucetMinder is a water conserving device that helps reduce faucet water consumption by as much as 90%.  The beauty of it is that it eliminates the bothersome need for turning the faucet on and off during simple water-using tasks such as washing hands and shaving.  Attached to a faucet spout, the FaucetMinder’s wand-like device releases water only when you push on it and stops water flow when it returns to its original position.  It can be installed easily without the help of a plumber and it has no electrical requirements such as batteries and motion sensors.

The Who: WaterSmart Technology is committed to finding, inventing, and bringing to market innovative new products that help us conserve water and energy in homes, offices, hotels, kitchens, landscaping and more.  WaterSmart Technology Founder Ken Wright truly believes in creating practical, inexpensive, and easy to use water conservation products including the ShowerMinder and No More Geysers.  He is currently working with public utility agencies to bring his products to the masses.

The technology of the FaucetMinder is so simple yet so smart.  It is a tool that enables you to save water without having to think about it and actually makes it difficult to waste water.  If all of us installed these in our homes and offices, think of how much impact we can make on reducing the demand on the water reserves.  I say go buy a FaucetMinder!
