Ecocity World Summit – Abu Dhabi 2015

The What: Ecocity World Summit (ECWS) 2015, a biennial event that will be hosted in the Middle East for the very first time, will tackle the issues around building ecocities in challenging environments, and serve as the platform upon which Abu Dhabi and the region will carry their ecocity visions forward. ECWS 2015 aims to build on UAE’s role as a serious player in sustainable development; support the development of sustainable growth strategies at the city-scale for the region and globally; and create a local, national and regional movement to accelerate sustainable city planning, land use, development, and the green buildings.

The 11th edition of the international conference series aims to unite people through a new way of living on the planet that provides the best possible cities while enhancing, not destroying, the biosphere. ECWS will be a collaborative platform for researchers and academia that aims to advance the state of thinking and to inspire the next generation of ideas, projects and strategies for ecocities of the future. There will be more than 70 speakers who are leaders in government, academia, private sector and civil society to discuss, create, and apply solutions that enable the development of sustainable cities around the world. Secretary General of Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi; Hussein Abaza, Head of UNEPs Economic and Trade, Geneva, AFED; Dr. Thani Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Director of Energy & Climate Change of the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Dr. Paul Downton, Architect, Writer, and Urban Evolutionary; Professor Walter Hood, Principal of Hood Design and Professor of Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning and Urban Design at UC Berkeley; Richard Register, Founder of Ecocity Builders and the International Ecocity Conference Series, Dr. Arab Hoballah, Chief of Sustainable Consumption and Production/SCP, UNEP and many more.

ECWS 2015 will be hosted in the UAE Capital of Abu Dhabi by Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD), and supported by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Urban Planning Council (UPC) and Masdar. The event is facilitated by Abu Dhabi Global Environmental Data Initiative (AGEDI) with the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA) as the destination host. The very first Ecocity Conference was held in Berkeley, California, United States.
